Water is considered an essential natural resource in the paper production process. At this manufacturing unit, the water is captured in the Piracicaba River, upstream from the municipality of Piracicaba. With a grant value of 700m3/h, the treatment stages are composed of: screening, capture, flocculation, decantation, filtration, disinfection, storage and distribution to the process.
OJI PAPÉIS ESPECIAIS has sought the optimization of its paper production process. In those stages, one of the main objectives is to reduce water consumption through environmental projects or technological innovations.
The graph confirms the company’s concern regarding the reduction of water consumption. Effluents are generated after the water is used in the paper production process. In order to return this effluent to the receiving body, it is necessary to remove the impurities, to avoid environmental impacts. The grant value for the discharge of effluents is 693.7m³/h.
The Company has two sewage treatment units, i.e., a primary treatment and a secondary treatment. The primary process is a physical chemical treatment, and the secondary process is a biological treatment, through activated sludge.
Solid waste is generated in these treatment stages. Most of the waste generated originates from the physical chemical physical treatment and the rest is generated in the biological treatment. Classified as Class II A waste (not hazardous and not inert) according to NBR10,004 the waste generation reaches an amount of 750 ton/month (damp).
OJI PAPÉIS ESPECIAIS develops strategies for the management of its solid waste, with the objective of: defining, planning and implementing goals to transform waste in a viable and sustainable manner.
The main destination of the solid waste generated in the productive process is ceramic manufacturers, through the co-processing technique for brick production. Part is also reused for the production of organic compounds, through the composting technique.
Environmental Control
We strive for continuous improvement in our processes and the application of technologies geared toward sustainable development, ensuring compliance with legislations.
For environmental control we use the application of the Environmental Performance Index - (EPI), a quantitative indicator that classifies the mill’s environmental practices by the fulfillment of necessary requirements for environmental management, control and prevention for the environment.
The company has an environmental control laboratory, where the main analyses are carried out for verification and control of the environmental performance of its facilities. Results of analyses of BOD, COD, pH, sedimentable solids, temperature and other parameters are reported quarterly to the environmental body.
Cleaner production program, or programa produção mais limpa (P+L)
The Programa Produção Mais Limpa (P+L) seeks to adapt the manufacturing operations to the international standards of environmental practices and compliance with the guidelines of the International Declaration on Cleaner Production (UNEP).
At OJI PAPÉIS ESPECIAIS, the projects developed during the Cleaner Production Course, held in partnership with Senai, bring actions according to the 4R philosophy (rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle) applied in the paper production process.
Aiming at synergy between the areas, professionals from various areas of the company take part in the training program for the internal development of the program.
Selective collection
The selective collection program presents significant reductions in waste generation over the years, contributing to the progressive reduction of waste sent to the industrial landfill. A very important achievement with this program is the level of awareness and involvement reached among the company’s professionals and providers.
The selective collection performed at OJI PAPÉIS ESPECIAIS is intended for recycling projects existing in the municipality of Piracicaba.
